Funny thing is, when I have a relationship with a tree - say, the enormous poplar and beeches and delicate dogwoods in my backyard - I have no problem identifying them in any season. Trees are so generous, though, when we pay any attention at all, they reciprocate.

Love the professor's response.

We park out at the end of every shopping lot to enjoy the trees.

I also went to a local nursery to purchase a maple, 2nd season revealed it was a sycamore. I've never regretted the switch-o change-o. It's less than 6 years old and 50' high. Beautifully cooling the house all summer. Divine guidance, maybe.

Noticing is what I have been trying to do for myself and the people I go walking with. It's by looking and looking that we finally get to distinguish one kind of plant from another. Latin names for trees is something I've never tried to master but my step-son did a course and found it the hardest thing to pass too. Perseverance at observing definitely yields results. And essential too.
